Barcarolle

Definition: A piece in compound meter (usually 6/8 or 12/8) intended to imitate the songs of Venetian gondoliers. It features a rhythmic, rocking accompaniment.

The Savvy Take: The left hand is the water; the right hand is the singer. The challenge is keeping the left hand rhythmic and steady (the waves) while allowing the right hand enough rubato to float on top without capsizing the boat.
