Free arrangement

Transposition

The act of playing or writing music in a key other than the original.

This is a survival skill for accompanists. If a singer says “This is too high,” you need to drop it a step. Practice transposition by thinking in scale degrees and chord functions (Roman numerals), or in intervals, rather than note names.
