Piano Key Clicks When Pressed: Diagnose It In Five Minutes

The click started a week ago, you've booked a tuning, and you never mentioned the click when you booked it. That's $140 at In Tune Piano Care for a piano that comes back in tune and still ticks. Tuners set pitch. Noise is a separate job, and whoever is coming needs to hear about it before he loads the car.

So spend five minutes first. A clicking key is wood hitting wood somewhere it's supposed to be hitting felt, and Sheffield technician Richard Lidster puts it in almost those words. There are eight places that happens. Two of them you can settle tonight with a flashlight.

Start With The Half-Stroke Test

Press the key halfway down and let it back up slowly, so the hammer never fires. A click that disappears at half stroke lives at the hammer end, and so does one that vanishes when you play as softly as the note will still speak. A click that survives both is somewhere under the key.

That split is real and it's loose. Five of the eight below sit under the key, and two of those five (the capstan in 5, the keyframe in 8) are action work with a technician's rate attached. The half-stroke test cuts the list roughly in half.

1. A Coin Behind The Keys, Or In One Case A Snake

There's an open gap behind your keys and coins and paperclips go through it. Fine Tuning calls this the easiest thing an owner can diagnose, and their found list runs to action figures and a snake. How you know: one key, started overnight, no season change behind it, and the sound is hard and metallic where felt problems knock dull. Take a flashlight to the slots either side. Cost: free if long tweezers reach it, or a $75 minimum visit at TX Pianos.

2. A Keytop Coming Unglued At The Front Lip

The keytop is glued to a wooden key stick. The joint lets go at the front lip, and the top flexes under your finger and snaps back against the wood. Real ivory tops come in two pieces, a head and a tail, and on my bench the tail is the piece that lifts. How you know: press the front lip with a fingernail without playing the note. A click with zero key motion is the top. Cost: one reglue is minutes plus the visit minimum; full sets run $450 at TX Pianos.

3. Loose Flange Screws (There Are 176 Of Them)

The most common cause on this list, and the first thing I check on a service call. One wood screw holds each hammer flange to its rail and one holds each wippen flange to its rail, so 176 before you count the damper flanges. The wood swells and shrinks with the seasons, a screw backs off, and the loose flange rocks on the rail on every stroke. Richard's Piano Service calls the result "clickety-clackety noises while you play." How you know: it's rarely one key. Listen across a section for a cluster of neighbours ticking, weeks after the heat or the AC starts running hard. It mostly disappears at half stroke. Cost: one to two hours at $60/hour plus parts (In Tune Piano Care) up to $150/hour (TX Pianos). That same $140 tuning covers 10 to 15 minutes of minor repair, so this one can ride along with your next tuning.

4. Worn Key Bushings (.146-Inch Pins)

Every key rides on two steel pins, one at the balance rail and one at the front, each passing through a mortise lined with bushing cloth. Howard Piano Industries sells balance rail pins at .146 inches in diameter. The cloth wears and bare wood raps the steel. Weiner Piano Service: "If the keys move with your fingers, you have worn key bushings." How you know: don't play the note. With the key at rest, rock the keytop sideways. A good key barely moves, and a worn one reproduces the exact tick from the rock alone. Cost: TX Pianos publishes $25 per key and $550 for the keyboard. Weiner Piano Service lays the job out over three days: keys out and off to the shop, new cloth in, keys back in the piano. Quality Piano Tuning Services lists the same full set at $490, so get a second quote.

5. A Brass Capstan On A Bare Wippen Heel

The capstan is the brass screw standing up at the back of the key, and it lifts the wippen. A cloth or leather cushion sits between them, and when it wears through, brass meets bare wood. Lidster describes the capstan "clicking against the wippen when a key is played," fixed with a thin felt over it. How you know: press as slowly as you can and the tick lands in the first few millimetres of dip. Release slowly and a second quieter tick arrives as the wippen settles back. Cost: minutes for one note at $60/hour (In Tune Piano Care) up to $150/hour (TX Pianos). All 88 is a bench job and gets quoted as one.

6. Loose Hammer Flange Pinning

The hammer shank pivots inside its flange on a center pin running through two cloth bushings. Howard Piano Industries notes that a hammer flange's pinning "can become loose over time." Worn bushings give the shank lateral slop, and it knocks inside the flange on every blow. How you know: get eyes on the hammer line, then push that hammer sideways and compare it to its neighbours. A correctly pinned hammer has almost no side play. A loose one flops. Cost: hourly, because repinning takes a center pin extractor, a broach kit and a micrometer to land the friction on spec.

7. A Loose Hammer Head On Its Shank

The head is glued onto a tapered shank, the joint dries out, and the head shifts a fraction on impact. Howard Piano Industries calls it a fairly easy fix with the very thin version of CA glue, once the action is out. How you know: slide a finger between that hammer and its strings so it can't reach them, then play hard. A click still there with the hammer blocked is at the hammer end. Cost: minutes per hammer at $60 to $150 per hour; pulling the action is most of the bill.

8. Keyframe Knock On A Grand

On a grand the keyframe rests on the keybed, and glide bolts threaded through the balance rail set how it bears at each point. Back one of them short of the keybed and the frame has nothing under it there, so it lifts and drops as the key rocks. On any piano, the balance rail punchings and the back rail cloth compress with age, so the key bottoms onto hard material. How you know: it wanders. Press several adjacent keys and the knock moves around under the whole area, from below and in front. Press firmly on the neighbours; if that silences it, you're hearing the frame. Cost: hourly, or part of a regulation at $450 for a grand and $300 for an upright (In Tune Piano Care) or $500 to $1,000 (TX Pianos).

What NOT To Do (The Danger Zone)

No aerosols. No WD-40, no silicone, no furniture polish. AAA Piano documented an upright whose action center pins a technician sprayed with WD-40 almost 30 years ago. The residue pulled in dirt and the flange felts hardened onto the pins. The action quit. Oil doesn't put felt back.

Don't tighten every screw you can see. The let-off button and the jack regulating screw set dimensions, and turning one can leave the note unplayable. On the flange screws you may touch, the spec is hand tight; past that you strip the hole in the rail.

Don't cut or bend anything to stop a noise. Dampers are regulated to leave the strings when the hammer is about halfway up, and trimming a damper arm with shears throws that away permanently. The replacement part means pulling the action.

Don't squirt superglue from the front. Thin CA runs down the shank, wicks into the center pin bushing and hardens. Now the hammer won't pivot.

Don't pull keys out to fish for a coin. Front rail pins are thin steel and they bend if a key comes off at an angle. A bent pin turns a clicking key into a binding key.

Don't wipe the keys with alcohol. Bradfield Piano warns that solvents dry the material and make key tops crack or loosen, which is number 2 on this list.

Don't wait it out. A loose flange lets the hammer wobble, and a wobbling hammer grinds its own striking face out of shape against the strings. A tick becomes a hammer that needs filing and voicing.

The Savvy Verdict: 42% At 68°F

Most of these clicks are wood and felt shrinking, the same reason your piano never quite stays in tune. The Piano Technicians Guild's number is 42% relative humidity at 68°F held steady, and Lidster gives a 40 to 50% working range. A house that runs 15% in January and 65% in July will eat the action cloths. A Piano Life Saver system or a winter humidity plan costs less than paying for this repair twice, and any part name above that's new to you is in the glossary.

Two of the eight you can settle tonight with a flashlight and a fingernail. For the rest, call the tuner back before the appointment and tell him which key it is and whether it survives the half stroke. He'll pack the broaches.
